📝 The Full Story

Here is where I learned to mix my frijolitos with huevos. I will always thank Fonda Margarita for that. You get here and get a coffee in a metal mug, the kind you get when camping. That's part of the magic. In the back, some big pots with guisos are steaming. That's the good stuff. Put any of those guisos in a tortilla and the magic happens. A good friend lives around the corner and told me you will have to wake up early, 5am early, to enjoy the Fonda. Now, from what he tells me, it's even more touristy and trendy, but that first visit was just a pilgrimage to good food. Anthony Bourdain has the place in his Mexico episode of No Reservations, the one where he did not get the fancy mole or the fancy tacos. He went straight for taquitos at a puestito downtown and made mole at a friend's house with his mom. That episode. I remember the details very clearly. La Fonda Margarita has been an institution in Mexico City for a while. I kind of like to land with jetlag just to have the excuse to visit, and also to avoid traffic. Frijolitos with huevo are still part of my breakfast, and this is the spot that taught me that lesson. Thanks, Fonda Margarita!
