🇪🇸 San Sebastián (Donostia)

A personal guide to pintxos bars, Basque cooking, and destination restaurants in and around the city.

Know before you go

Donostia is the Basque name and San Sebastián is the Spanish name for the same city. This guide also includes exceptional destinations nearby; Mugaritz is in rural Errenteria, roughly 20 minutes away by car.

La Cuchara de San Telmo
Parte Vieja (🍽️ Basque Pintxos)
Santa Korda Kalea, 4, 20003 Donostia, Gipuzkoa, Spain
A tiny, energetic pintxos bar known for hot dishes cooked to order rather than cold pintxos displayed on the counter. The beef cheek and suckling pig are standouts. Arrive before opening if you want to avoid the longest queue, and expect mostly standing room.

Andoni Luis Aduriz's two-Michelin-starred restaurant is an exploratory, multi-course experience rather than a conventional meal. It is in a rural setting about 20 minutes from San Sebastián, operates seasonally from spring through autumn, and requires advance reservations.
