Arrin Cuan: the flavors of a good Guatemalan grandma
Why go: Bringing foreign guests
Order: Cuatro Caminos
I remember that since a long time ago, every time I had some guests in Guatemala, whenever I wanted them to really understand our food, you have to show them our guisados. And Arrin Cuan is that. It's the flavors of grandma, not particularly grandma, that's more unique, but definitely a good Guatemalan grandma, and they really make you enjoy Guatemalan food.
They have a branch in Guatemala City, actually two, one in Zone 1, the downtown one, one in Zone 9, a little bit more focused on executives and foreigners visiting, but the one I like and the one I usually go is the one in Antigua. I recently learned that they will be expanding and they will have a bigger one with a terrace, which makes me very excited.
Now for the food, just go for the Cuatro Caminos all the time. This is basically you get to try four Guatemalan dishes. Last time we were there we had hilachas, subanik, pepián and kak'ik. And if you want to try any particular dish, they also have it. Jocón is also one of my favorites, and the one that I tried here with some very tender chicken. The lomito is good, and they also have other varieties and preparations of local Guatemalan cuisine. Their tortillas are very good and handmade.
The service is very attentive, they were very nice and friendly, and definitely the place where you want to bring some foreign guests. When I was visiting last time in Antigua, there was a group who was heading for a few tours in the country, and this was part of the adventure. So it felt right. It's the place where we locals can bring people to try our food without going through the hassle of doing these amazing creations. That is Arrin Cuan.
